Hello:
I myself am a descendant of an Adams through the line of Rebecca Adams and Nathaniel Patten so if you need any information on the Adams-Patten line
I will be glad to help you there.
Cheers
Peter G.Albers
Hello, Mr. Albers! I apologize for the extremely late reply – I haven’t checked the comments on this blog in quite a while. Thank you so much for offering your help! It is awfully nice to have more contacts for our shared research. I am still working on the bulk of John Amos Adams’ core line, but will be sure to contact you when I’m ready to branch it out further. Thanks so much!
hi my gggranadfather was brittain adams, from sussex co. va. i believe i have made a connection back to john ap adams. i would like to know what the Ap stands for and if you have gone as far as i have seen , back to wales? howgood is this reasearch?this one line goes back to 408 and names not even close to adams. they had some wild names. hope you can help. thanks, john s adams. 731 780 2501 , 5 holland st stanton tn. 38069
I am a descendent of Samuel Adams and Mary Beauchamp. Samuel was born in 1772, perhaps in Ohio? I have traced our line back to Lady Margaret Beauchamp of France who married John, Duke of Somerset England, 1439. The name ap Adams was just a variation of the spelling Adams. Another spelling of it was Badham. This information was taken from the Book of Heraldry. I am trying to find the connection our family has to John ap Adams. If you can help, please let me know. Hello John,
I’m sorry for the late reply – I had triplets in February and I just haven’t had much time online anymore ;). It is WONDERFUL to hear from you and learn of our connection through Brittain Adams.
“Ap” means “son of”.
All the information presented on this blog is the direct research conducted by my grandmother, Geraldine Adams, over the course of 40 years. During that time, she made personal interviews, landmark and graveyard visits, countless library hours and personal correspondence with relatives and librarians across the country.
While I’m sure no genealogical work is without its flaws, the sheer scope, effort, thoroughness and number of individuals who have contributed gives a great amount of credibility and confidence to this work.
That said, there is debate over the connection between the John Ap Adams (Wales) and Robert & Henry Adams (America) families – some research argues that John Ap Adams’ line completely ended in 1424.
Sources FOR the connection:
* The Book of Dignities, by Henry Wittemore (compiled by Joseph Hayden)
* History of London, by Maitland; London, 1756
* A Genealogical History of Robert Adams of Newbury, Massachusetts, by Andrew N. Adams, publ. 1900
* Essex Antiquarian*, “Ancestry of Robert Adams of Newbury” by Lydia Adams-Williams of Washington, D.C. #: ADAMS 4432.152
* Encyclopedia of Heraldry, by John B. Burke
Sources AGAINST the connection:
* Henry Adams of Somersetshire, England and Braintree, Mass.: His English Ancestry and Some of His Descendants” [New York, 1927], by Josiah Gardner Bartlett
* Victoria County History: A History Of The County Of Gloucester, Vol, 10, pp, 62-68
* Bradney’s ‘History of Monmouthshire’ (wherein the name John ‘Badam’ is a corruption of the name John ‘ap Adam’ )
* Ancestors and Descendants of Jeremiah Adams, 1794-1883, of Salisbury, Connecticut, Sullivan County, New York, Harbor Creek, Pennsylvania and Vermilion, Ohio” by Enid Eleanor Adams (1974), p. 652
This claim & controversy is acknowledged in the work presented here, as originally notated by Gareldine Adams. I am so glad I found this site without having to “join” something. I have an Adams Ancestry my mom gave me years ago that starts with Wodin or Odin, King of Northern Europe about 225 AD. Don’t know how anyone possible could trace back that far or how much is accurate. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find this ancestry listing from Lady Elizabeth de Gournai who actually married the first Sir John Ap Adams. All the names prior to this are actually branches that lead up to this marriage and the Adams line, I am assuming. Fascinating!
I am a descendent of Robert’s son, Abraham who married Mary Pettingell around 1670….and on down the line to ME, and my kids and grandkids. My list had Thomas ApAdams (5) marrying Lady Millicent Inge, which apparently is an error as he married Jane Inge. The Millicent name comes in with his son John (6) who married Millicent Bessylls. My list did not have the first name. Mystery solved.
My thanks to your grandmother for doing this research and you for posting.

The hero who threw the stools at the gunman did save three lives, is a direct descendant of John ap Adam, Lawrence Adams. Had not changed it, his name would have been Lawrence ap Adam.
Hi there! I’m a descendant of Richard and Margaret (Armager) Adams through their son William (although we didn’t lose the Adams name until two generations before me. Based on what you have here Richard appears to be our last common ancestor). I just wanted to let you know how wonderful this site is. Even the stuff that doesn’t really apply to me is fun to read!
Thank you for putting all this up,
Amanda Harvey
